The Artist’s Lens

Join us for The Artist’s Lens, a movie night series at the Akron Main Library, designed to bring local artists together, spark creativity, and offer fresh perspectives on the art-making process. Sponsored by the Akron Society of Artists, this event creates an inspiring and educational space for exploring the power and value of art in society.

Before each screening, a local artist will share their insights in a 10-15 minute introduction or lead a discussion afterward. These conversations will allow artists and art enthusiasts alike to dive deeper into the themes and challenges of creating meaningful work.

Whether you’re an established artist, a budding creative, or simply someone who appreciates the value of art, The Artist’s Lens offers a unique opportunity to connect, share ideas, and draw inspiration from both the films and each other.

Come for the film, stay for the conversation, and be part of a vibrant artistic community!

We’ll be screening Big Eyes (2014), a biographical drama directed by Tim Burton. The film tells the true story of American artist Margaret Keane, whose iconic paintings of children with oversized, haunting eyes captivated the public in the 1950s and 60s — though for years, her husband Walter Keane falsely claimed credit for her work.

For this special screening, we’re thrilled to welcome Ross M. Kowalski, a Cleveland-based Intellectual Property Attorney, who will give a brief presentation exploring the legal side of the art world.

Don’t miss this exciting blend of film, art, and law!

We wil be screening BASQUIAT (1996), an unconventional biopic. The film tells brief story of Jean Michel Basquiat, a world renowned New York street artist who struggled with fame, drugs and his identity.

Special Presentation by TYRON HOISTEN. Tyron Hoisten is an Akron-based filmmaker and writer, and founding member of the Akron Black Artist Guild, whose work blends authenticity and structure to tell meaningful stories that elevate diverse voices and inspire audiences.
